fyv.art - run by Doug Chinnery and Valda Bailey – supports photographers interested in abstraction, expressionism, and fine art.
Periodically, they give us prompts to spur our creativity. When Tina Turner passed away, the prompt was to be inspired – in any way that felt right – to the song “River Deep Mountain High.”
I created this image that I called Up Lifted.
This is a tumultuous river of clouds. While this is a morning sky, it is not calming. It has dark grays, light grays and somberish blues that are all rumbling across the sky, but those tones are tempered and brightened by the golds of the morning sun, so it has complexity and hope.
It felt to me like a strong person’s intention to fight against the negative and strive for the potential and optimism and “high” of a new day.
It’s also intentionally grainy, emphasizing the conflict and discord of Tina’s life, which was not simple and smooth.
