I saw Hitchcock’s “The Birds” movie at a tender age – and hold a sense of horror in memory. At the time, I never thought of the significance of the bird attacks. They were just creepy.
According to screenrant.com, though, Hitchcock included them to remind us of “humanity’s failure to appreciate and protect nature.”
Fast forward several decades to an evening, just before dusk, when I heard a raucous buzz outside my door. I looked out to see hundreds of crows swooping and swirling, darkening the sky in a black cloud.
As the black cloud came closer to me, the old uneasiness returned. I will try, next time I see this phenomenon. to think about our role as humans to protect the glorious nature that I love shooting so much. Still, the experience was very Hitchcock-y, enhanced further by knowing that a flock of crows is called a murder. Ooh.
