Maine, for me, is about water in various shades of blue and white and gold. In working harbors with well-worn piers, in gentle ponds strewn with barnacle-covered rocks, and in rushing, roaring waterfalls. Everywhere in midcoast Maine is a stone’s throw from water.
I love how water creates art. Through sunlight that changes moment by moment. Through motion and reflections that wiggle and squiggle into lines and waves. In masses of seaweed. And in the feeling and sound of ocean swells crashing onto the shore, hypnotically. Over and over.
During a recent trip to Maine, I focused on making expressive images that are interpretations of how I see these jewels of nature. I made this image at Rockport Harbor in the late afternoon sun, when the light turned parts of the seaweed and sand to a warm, bronzy gold. The seaweed seemed to be waltzing.
