There’s so much chaos in the world now that we seek places to restore a sense of calm and tranquility. Being at sea does this for many people.
Consider this snippet from John Masefield's 1902 poem called Sea-Fever:
I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship, and a star to steer her by.
Here, a classic two-masted schooner sits calmly on the water. Its sails are furled and a small flag flies atop the forward mast. And the water, lightly rippled, catches the light, creating an almost metallic sheen.
In the background are the lovely rolling hills, covered with mist, enhancing the sense of depth. In this stillness, we feel serene. The atmosphere is almost dreamlike.
I made this image in Camden, Maine while on board the #Olad schooner with Captain Aaron Lincoln during a workshop at @MaineMedia with photographer/educator @SalTaylorKydd.
